The EQUUS Santa Fe Safari
Our most exciting new venture is our EQUUS Santa Fe Safari—a high-touch adventure alongside EQUUS Cultural Educator Thunder Bear Yates and EQUUS Outdoor Guide Michael Bowen into the wild high desert outback to find the wild horses and visit the petroglyphs.
This offering is for people who want more than a trip. It’s for those who want a living experience that connects them with land, story, and spirit. It’s for travelers who are curious, open, and ready to step into a day that blends natural wonder with deep cultural context. You don’t have to be an expert hiker or outdoors person. You just need a sense of curiosity and a willingness to be present.
The EQUUS Santa Fe Safari is still in its early stages of development. This all began as a creative idea with a generous client who was willing to step in with us and help see what this could become. We are refining, learning, and building it with care before opening it more broadly.
"Words fall short in expressing my gratitude to Kelly and the EQUUS Team. Months of careful planning and joyful effort on their part went into turning a 'wild hair' aspiration into a dream come true!”
Our Santa Fe Safari is perfect for:
• People who crave meaningful adventure and connection with wild landscapes.
• Travelers who want to see and feel the land, not just look at it.
• Learners who value cultural wisdom, Indigenous history, and context woven into the journey.
• Anyone inspired by wild horses, ancient petroglyphs, and stories etched in the earth.
• Couples, solo travelers, friends, and families seeking an unforgettable shared experience.
This is not a typical sightseeing tour. It is hands-on, immersive, and human-guided. You will walk alongside guides who ground your experience in place, meaning, and respect for the land and its history. You will walk away changed, not just impressed.
Where It Happens:
The adventure unfolds in the Santa Fe high desert — a place shaped by millions of years of ecological history, Indigenous culture, and breathtaking terrain. From ancient petroglyph sites to open vistas where wild mustangs roam, every step feels expansive and alive.
The Santa Fe Safari Experience
"Words fall short in expressing my gratitude to Kelly and the EQUUS Team. Months of careful planning and joyful effort on their part went into turning a 'wild hair' aspiration into a dream come true!
The maiden EQUUS Santa Fe Safari could not have unfolded more magically or more fluidly. Thunder Bear Yates and Michael Bowen made up the boots-on-the-ground team that guided the experience; their camaraderie, easy humor and mutual respect made them an absolute pleasure as companions for the day. Thunder Bear recounted some stories of his tribe - including the significance of some ancient petroglyphs we visited - infusing the journey with reverence and the wisdom of a culture that still actively partners with the natural world. Michael shared detailed knowledge of the geography and topography of the areas we visited and pointed out a variety of animal tracks along the way, making the land a living classroom and endless source of wonder.
With all this richness woven throughout the 'safari', it was the cherry on top when we actually did have a mustang encounter!! Michael's recollection of a prior sighting in the area and his strong instinctual navigation led us to a stallion, mare and foal in a small clearing. Time stood still as we crouched in the sandy soil, careful to not be intrusive.
To be in the 'field' of (a) wild mustang(s) is a sacred experience. The full impact will continue to unfold for each of us present. Witnessing wild horses in their natural habitat evoked profound awe and gratitude. In that timeless meeting space between human and horse, I found myself fervently wishing that they never know confinement or domestication - that they always remain free.
If the first EQUUS Santa Fe Safari was this successful (on all counts), it can only grow more amazing from here! I would strongly encourage anyone -everyone! - to treat themselves to one. This is an experience you will not regret - nor forget."
